About the Product

The Burton Smalls is the entry point into Burton's youth lineup for kids who've moved past the most basic beginner boards and are starting to explore the whole mountain with some attitude. Its Flat Top profile — flat between the bindings with early rise at the tip and tail — keeps the contact points lifted just enough to take the bite out of edge catches, which is exactly what a kid needs when they're still figuring out their edge angles. The flex comes in at a 4/10, soft but not floppy, and the true twin shape means it rides the same regular or switch. The Super Fly 800G core uses alternating hard and soft wood laminations to keep the board light for smaller riders while still giving it enough pop to feel lively. The Dualzone EGD runs the wood grain along the toe and heel edges for steadier edge-hold and extra durability where the board takes the most abuse, while the tip and tail stay pliable for pressing and buttering. Add in the beveled edges from the Rail Ready tune and the Pro-Tip tapered nose and tail, and you've got a board that's genuinely forgiving without going completely noodle on you — it holds a traverse, links turns, and will lock into a box without drama.

This board is built for lighter, smaller kids who are past the snowplow and linking turns confidently, and who want to start hitting small features in the park or cruising groomers with more speed. Because the Smalls tops out around 142cm (Burton suggests boot sizes US 7k and under), size by your kid's weight and boot — it's the right call for a younger ripper up to roughly 110 lbs, not for a bigger teen who's outgrown it lengthwise. The Channel mounting system is a real bonus here — you can dial in stance width and angle precisely as a rider grows. That said, if your kid is a true beginner who's still learning to stop or just getting off the bunny slope, the Burton After School Special is a better fit with its softer flex, more rockered, catch-free feel, and simple single-strap bindings. And if you've got a heavier or more advanced young rider who's already spinning off jumps and has a season or two of park time, they'll outgrow the Smalls fast and should look at the Burton Custom Smalls Camber, which adds a PurePop Camber profile and more pop underfoot for riders who are ready to charge.
