About the Product
The Dalbello J Green 4.0 GW is a four-buckle overlap junior boot built around a flex index of 40 — which in youth terms means soft enough that a kid doesn't have to fight the plastic to make the boot bend, but with enough structure to actually transfer energy to the ski. The shell is made from Dalbello's recycled DB Hyperlite material, and the four aluminum buckles plus a 25 mm Eco Power Strap give parents a simple, secure closure system a kid can manage themselves after a run or two. The ECOCOMFORT J liner is thermally insulated and cut specifically for narrower junior feet — it's not heat-moldable, so what you're getting is a comfortable, well-fitted production liner, not a custom-formed one. The pre-mounted GripWalk Junior soles and a built-in ski-walk mechanism with over 65 degrees of cuff movement mean kids can walk the lift line without waddling or slipping on lodge floors, and the boot is built for GripWalk-compatible bindings (ISO 23223). Worth noting: a GripWalk sole will not sit correctly in a binding that only accepts an ISO 5355 alpine sole, so if the family's rental skis or home quiver runs bindings that are not GripWalk-certified, MNC or MN, have a technician check them before buying.
This boot is right for a beginner-to-intermediate junior skier who has outgrown a simple rear-entry kid boot and is ready to move into a proper four-buckle overlap shell — think a confident green-to-blue skier, roughly ages 5 through 10 depending on foot size. Who should not buy this: if your kid is already ripping blues confidently and pushing into blacks, they've outgrown flex 40 and will muscle through it without getting useful feedback — at that point they've topped out Dalbello's Green junior line (it stops at flex 40), so the next real step is a stiffer junior boot in the flex 50-70 class, which is worth fitting in person rather than guessing at online. Conversely, a very young beginner on lesson terrain might be better served by a simpler two-buckle or rear-entry boot they can get on and off without help. Junior feet grow fast, and last width matters as much for kids as for adults — a foot that's genuinely wide for their size will swim in the heel of a standard junior last and feel loose through the cuff. Come in and we'll check the shell fit before you commit; a boot that's one shell size too long to account for growth will wreck their form and make skiing feel worse, not better.
