About the Product
The Van Deer H-Power 89 is an 89 mm all-mountain ski — the widest of the three H-Power widths, and the one that stops asking you to stay on the groomer. Where the narrow 68 lives on hardpack, the 89 has the width for soft, cut-up and variable snow, and it still holds a firm edge pointed back at the corduroy.
Underneath is a beech-poplar core between two layers of Titanal. On this ski Van Deer prints the metal thickness — 0.5 mm on top, 0.5 mm at the base — a figure it does not publish for the 68 or 78. Beech brings rebound, poplar keeps the weight in check, and the two sheets of metal settle an 89 mm platform at speed. It rides an ocher Marker FDT RACE PRO plate, factory-tuned to Hirscher's own spec, not a generic grind.
Van Deer builds it for intermediate-to-advanced skiers, and that reads right: firm morning snow, variable terrain by midday, softer snow late — one ski for all of it. It is not a beginner's ski. A twin-Titanal build rewards a skier who drives it and goes dull under one who does not. Frontside-only carvers should buy the 68 or 78 instead: both grip harder and change edge faster on piste. And 89 mm runs out of surface area on a deep day — that is what the Freeride 98 and 108 are for.
Sidecut is 130-89-116.6 mm at every length, so length alone sets the turn shape: 11 m of radius at 159 cm out to 19 m at 191 cm. Short turns quicker; long holds bigger, faster arcs.
The plate ships fitted, so $1,650 buys the ski-and-plate build, and the matched Marker COMP 13 binding (DIN 4-13) is the second option on this page at $2,050. We mount it, set the release value (a DIN number is an indicator, not a guarantee) and help you pick a length. Van Deer gives no camber or rocker figure for this ski, so the profile in our spec table is our own read, not a brand number.
